Synthesis

2021
Project:
Final Major project (NTu)
Location: 31 goose gate, Nottingham

Located in the heart of the creative quarter in Hockley, Nottingham, 31 goose gate houses the hybridisation between two local businesses: 44 collective & five leaves bookshop. Whilst 44 collective aims to showcase emerging artists through a mixed programme of exhibitions and events, five leaves bookshop sells and publishes independent writers with a focus on literary, political and social issues.

The aim of this design is to create an interactive, multi-disciplinary social space, highlighting the two business’s manifesto’s. Bringing together artists and writers, housing a thoughtful and interactive space for creatives to be inspired by the city of Nottingham. Integrating art and literature together, aiming to educate and inspire members of the public to engage in the creative multi disciplinary community of Nottingham.

Context

First examining the site context through a rendered site map produced on photoshop, as well as initial site sketches to further examine the environmental context of 31 goose gate.

Establishing The Brand: 44 collective  x  5 leaves publishing

Producing infographic diagrams to better understand each business, as well as establishing a material palette. Understanding the core elements that each business needs and how I can create core design elements to showcase the best of both businesses.

The material palette was chosen to respect the original architecture of the building, whilst incorporating curvature, colour psychology and use of natural materials and lighting to create an atmospheric interior.

Development

As part of the initial design development process, it was important to plan how each of the spaces would be best utilised within the existing building.

This design explores creating a core vertical circulation / social space that would integrate the businesses. The other spaces rotate around the core feature, creating a multidisciplinary platform. Developing from the initial building use plan, a infographic building use diagram was created to further explore the design idea. This building use diagram has lead to the final design of this project.

Technical  Analysis

Technical analysis conducted as a part of the synthesis project in order to understand the construction of the existing building and the technical integration to the new proposed designs.

These technical drawings focus on the structural system of the existing 31 goose gate building and the proposed design. Placing emphasis on the existing hip roof structure, existing timber floor structure and the proposed mezzanine composite structural holorib floor.

3D Models

Final 1:100 site model and 1:20 sectional model created using grey card, corrugated card, balsa wood and copper wires. Incorporating 3D printing and laser cutting into model making allows for a more accurate and detailed portrayal of the final design.

Let’s Collaborate!

I am an art director and interior architect from Hong Kong, based in London. Through a multi-disciplinary approach, I holistically integrate analogue and digital exploration to disrupt and challenge preconceived notions. My work is concept-driven, navigating the intersectionality between architecture, experiential design, and visual communication to curate a multi-sensory platform that delves into the intangible realm of the third space.
